California is rich in camping spots and areas where you can spend the weekend or holidays with your family or friends. There are scores of fun-filled activities that you can do from hiking to horseback riding to playing water sports.

Dome Tents

Dome tents are usually hexagonal and are often formed by two crossing poles. They are popular because they are easy to pitch and dismantle. Normally, these are freestanding which means there is no need for stakes or lines. Because of this, these are the best choice when camping by the beach or a place where the ground is sandy.

This may cause some problems when you are camping in areas prone to strong winds so it is advisable to situate your tent in a sheltered spot. You may reinforce the strength of the tent by having three or more crossing poles but note that this may add to the weight. Even so, dome tents are light when compared to other tents of similar size and dimension. They are spacious and the corners work as extra space where you can store your gears.

Cabin Tents

Cabin tents are great when you are camping with your family or a big group of friends. As the name implies, these are shaped like typical cabins. They are spacious because of the straight walls and allow even a tall person to stand upright while inside. You can add dividers or doors if you want to have privacy. Family campers like this feature because of the security they feel in staying together while still maintaining personal space.

These are usually made of durable materials so they are ideal for most weather conditions (three-seasons) or when you are planning to camp for a longer period. Because of the tents’ durability, they naturally cost more than the others do. They are also bulky and require a substantial amount of storage space when not in use. Moreover, they are heavier and harder to pitch because of their size.

A-Frame Tents

The traditional A-frame tents consist of two poles and wires for stability. When pitched correctly, these can withstand weather beatings.  However, A-frame tents have very little headroom due to the steep slope of the walls. These days, A-frames are modified by the use of curved poles for more stability and added room. They can be freestanding and usually come with full-coverage flysheets. Some of the modified versions of this make use of a third pole or a hoop to make the center area wider. These adjustments added strength to the tents but as a consequence, they also added to the weight.
