Essential Gear for Beach Camping in South California

May 16th, 2010 · No Comments · Camping In California

Almost everyone can find a beach to love in South California. That is how varied its communities are that it can cater to the diverse groups of people that visit the area all year round. Numerous factors attract people to these beaches—partying, surfing, and even camping.  If you are one of the many who chose to camp by the beach, there are some things that you should not be without.

Beach Tent and Flysheet

A beach tent is one of the most basic camping gear you should not forget to bring unless you want to risk being at the mercy of the natural elements. You want to be as comfortable as you can while you are away from home so the beach tents should be a good substitute. If you are camping with your family, make sure that the tent is big enough to accommodate everyone, with some extra room for movement.

Sleeping Bags and Pads

One good thing you already have going for you is that the sand is soft and you do not have to worry about sleeping on hard-packed earth. However, sleeping on uneven surface might not contribute to a good night’s sleep so you need to bring sleeping bags and pads as well. These examples of camping equipment can also keep you warm in case the temperature drops in the evenings.

Cooking Paraphernalia

Preparing food by cooking over an open fire is idyllic but if you are camping with children, you need to bring a stove (but secure a campfire permit for this). In addition, bring pots, pans, a portable grill, eating utensils, and a cooler (to keep beverages chilled and food items fresh). You may also bring along a Swiss army knife because you never know when you might need it.

Lighting Implements

You want to go camping equipped with various sources of light. Take flashlights (with spare batteries), candles, and waterproof matches. If you have permit, you can light a bonfire in your camping area and play games or tell ghosts stories outside your beach tent. Include a small bucket in your camping equipment to help put out the fire after.

Food and Water

Bring food that is easy to pack, store, prepare, and eat. Canned foods, beef jerky, and hotdogs are some examples of what parents can take so they will not be stuck cooking but also have time to enjoy.

If you are not sure about the water source, bring enough water to last you and your family during your stay. Otherwise, you can boil all your drinking water on-site or use purifying tablets.

Shade and Foldable Chairs

A beach camping is a great chance to work on your tan so go lounge on foldable chairs. However, there is such a thing as too much sun so equip yourself with beach umbrellas for when the heat becomes less than tolerable.

First Aid and Additional Sun Protection

You should also have bug spray (along with the Band Aids, iodine, and alcohol in your first aid kit) to protect yourself and your kids from insects and other pests. For extra sun protection, bring sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses.

Rain Gear and other Clothing

Summer is the best time to go beach camping. There is also the ever-present possibility of rain so come prepared with rain jackets or ponchos. Bring extra socks for chilly evenings and bathing suits for swimming.

Fun Stuff

Camping on the beach will be more pleasurable if you can keep yourself and your family happy and entertained. Bring some board games and a portable music player that you can enjoy while in your beach tent on the rainy days. Take inflatable and sand toys along with your camping equipment.

One other item that you should include is a camera. Capture the funny and happy moments with your family or the beautiful surroundings so you can post the images on Facebook or MySpace to share with your friends.

Make your family camping by the beach an unforgettable event. Bring these essentials with you as you relax, enjoy, and have the time of your lives.
